Singapore Chinatown Lantern Project: 2021 Ox Year Street Light-Up
The Singapore Chinatown lantern project for the 2021 Chinese New Year street light-up turned approved Ox Year concepts into buildable illuminated displays. Star Factory Lantern handled production engineering, complete lantern and decorative-element manufacturing, export delivery, on-site technical supervision, and maintenance training.
The 2021 Singapore Chinatown Chinese New Year light-up extended across 880 metres and featured 888 lanterns and decorations, including 88 ox lanterns and a 10-metre centerpiece. Star Factory Lantern manufactured and delivered 477 pieces for five project groups: 90 illuminated lantern units and 387 decorative elements.

The Year of the Ox installation was planned as a connected festive journey rather than a single centerpiece. It combined a major golden ox landmark with repeated zodiac forms, suspended decorations, and street-level scenes across the Chinatown district. Production and cross-border coordination took place while travel and site access were restricted, so modular engineering, clear packing records, and close work with the Singapore team were essential.

Star Factory Lantern was responsible for converting the approved creative direction into manufacturable lantern systems and producing all lantern and decorative components within our contracted scope. The 477-piece package was organized into Success, Harvest, Diligence, Centerpiece, and Photo Spot groups. Two core team members then travelled to Singapore to supervise installation with the local crew and train local staff in routine maintenance.

Turning the 10-metre ox into transportable, installable modules.
Factory production ran from November 23 to December 22, 2020. The centerpiece and route displays were divided into numbered steel-frame sections so they could be surfaced, wired, tested, packed, shipped by sea, and reassembled in the correct sequence in Singapore.
A landmark lantern must read clearly from street level while remaining practical to transport and service. The frame divisions, connection points, illuminated zones, silk finish, and packing order therefore had to work as one coordinated system—not as separate decorative decisions.

Singapore University of Technology and Design students contributed to the creative zodiac concepts for the Chinatown audience. After organizer approval, Star Factory Lantern translated the drawings into manufacturable structures, lighting layouts, surface finishes, modular divisions, and packing plans while preserving the intended character of each design.

The organizer and student designers shaped the event theme, cultural message, and cartoon-style zodiac interpretations for the Chinatown audience.
Buildable production development
Our engineering and production teams converted the approved concepts into stable frames, lighting zones, weatherproof silk finishes, separable modules, labeled packing units, and installation reference material.

The specification called for weatherproof silk and high-density LED arrays. Across a long public route, lighting density had to remain visually consistent while the circuits stayed divided into serviceable zones. Large forms also had to be split without losing their silhouettes after reassembly.
COVID-19 restrictions made a clear installation plan especially important. Numbered components, packing records, drawings, and direct supervision allowed our two on-site specialists and the Singapore crew to work through assembly and maintenance requirements efficiently.
The same review logic is used for today's commercial Chinese lantern displays: confirm environment, structural divisions, lighting density, fabric finish, cable routing, packing volume, unloading access, and installation plan before production is released.
