How Mid-Autumn Festival Lanterns Took Shape in the Workshop

In July 2025, Star Factory Lantern was building a Mid-Autumn collection around the moon, mooncakes, Chang’e and floral forms. The photographs show greeting lanterns and metal frameworks in progress; the original film offers a closer view of the larger character work.

Inside the workshop

The frames established each lantern’s form

Before the colour or light could be tested, the workshop team shaped the metal frameworks. Round forms, decorative details and the larger figure needed different support lines, but each had to keep its outline once covered and illuminated.

The July photographs capture this stage rather than a finished night-time display. They show the practical work behind a collection intended to bring several festival symbols together.

Mooncakes, Chang’e and flower forms

The full moon is the clearest visual cue for Mid-Autumn Festival. The collection developed whole and half-mooncake shapes with patterned surfaces, linking a familiar festival food to the larger illuminated scene.

Chang’e takes shape

Chang’e, the figure in the well-known legend of a journey to the moon, gave the project a human character beside its round forms. The large frame in this photograph shows the scale of the character work; the original production film shows the figure at a later workshop stage.

Floral details

Orchid-inspired forms were part of the original collection. The metalwork photograph shows a radiating decorative frame in progress, before the surface work and lighting were added.

Why these symbols belong together

A festival centred on the full moon and reunion

Mid-Autumn Festival brings together moon viewing, mooncakes, lanterns and family gatherings. For people familiar with the tradition, the round moon and mooncake shapes evoke reunion. For visitors encountering it for the first time, Chang’e offers a way into one of the festival’s best-known stories.

The red-and-white greeting lanterns in the opening photograph use Chinese wishes for a full moon and family togetherness. Those messages gave the workshop collection a cultural starting point while the larger characters and floral forms developed the scene around them.

Planning a Mid-Autumn lantern display?

Start with the story you want visitors to follow. A moon or Chang’e figure can anchor the scene; mooncakes, flowers and greeting lanterns can connect entrances, walking routes and places to stop for photographs.

  • Theme and site: send reference artwork, venue photographs, usable dimensions and the main viewing direction.
  • Display layout: describe entrances, photo areas, streets or park routes, and the character or symbol you want to lead the scene.
  • Project details: include quantities, opening date, destination, power access and installation conditions.
