Mid-Autumn Festival Lanterns in Australia
A glowing rabbit, a mooncake-shaped base and a canopy of lanterns brought familiar Mid-Autumn imagery to a Melbourne celebration. Star Factory Lantern designed and produced the displays, handled transport and provided installation guidance.

The project
A Melbourne celebration built around light and reunion
For this 2024 Mid-Autumn event, the lanterns formed a setting for people to gather, watch performances and take photographs. A red framework carried rows of warm yellow lanterns, while illuminated floral columns and a white rabbit on a mooncake-shaped base gave the scene its distinctive festival character.
Our role connected the visual design with production and delivery. We designed the lantern displays, made the finished pieces, handled their transport to Australia and provided installation guidance. The photographs below show how the completed elements came together at the event.

The display design
Three elements that brought the festival setting together
A single large sculpture can act as a landmark. Here, the rabbit was part of a wider composition: overhead lanterns, decorative columns and an open frame connected the main photo feature with the surrounding celebration.
A rabbit and mooncake photo feature
The white rabbit’s tall ears and yellow mooncake-shaped base are easy to recognise in the night photographs. Visitors stood beside the display for portraits, with the red frame and smaller lanterns continuing into the background.
A canopy of warm light
Repeated round lanterns gave the scene a consistent colour and rhythm. For a new venue, their spacing, suspension height and relationship to pedestrian routes should be planned together with the larger display pieces.
Space for the celebration
The wide photograph shows visitors and performers within the lantern setting. When adapting this idea, allow separately for photo stops, audience viewing and performance movement so one activity does not block another.

Familiar symbols, shared through a local celebration
The rabbit, mooncake and lantern motifs give the display a clear connection to Mid-Autumn traditions.
