Dragon Lantern Display for Cheng Leong Keng Temple
A 40-foot illuminated dragon and a companion good-fortune display created for the 2024 Lunar New Year decorations at Cheng Leong Keng Temple in Selandar, Melaka.
Project Brief
A dragon-year centerpiece for its temple setting
The display needed to read clearly as a dragon-year celebration while remaining practical to assemble at the destination.
This Malaysia project combined two custom-made lantern groups. A long illuminated dragon formed the main visual landmark, while a taller good-fortune composition brought together a second dragon, a pearl form and auspicious symbols. The finished composition uses warm gold, red and blue lighting to give the dragon a strong night-time silhouette. Cloud bases, raised details and the flowing body shape keep the display easy to read from different viewing distances.
The main dragon measures about 40 feet, or approximately 12 meters, and creates a natural photo point near the temple entrance. The companion display measures about 5 meters long and 4 meters high, adding height and reinforcing the Lunar New Year theme.
Fabrication Evidence
From steel structure to illuminated finish
The project photographs document both workshop fabrication and completed installation. The dragon's curved body was divided into manageable sections, then shaped, surfaced, colored and fitted with internal lighting before the full composition was checked together.
This pre-dispatch assembly allowed the team to review the dragon's continuous outline, the relationship between body sections and the appearance of the illuminated surface. The long body was organized into transportable sections while preserving the continuous serpentine form.
Shaped and colored surface
Scaled textures, flame forms, facial details and cloud bases created a readable silhouette in daylight and after dark.
