Lantern Silk Repair: How to Replace Torn Fabric
A three-step workshop guide to replacing a damaged section of fabric on a steel-framed lantern.

01 / Before the repair
What “Lantern Silk” Means in This Guide
Many large Chinese lantern displays use a lightweight decorative fabric stretched over shaped steel ribs and lit from within. In workshop language, this covering may be called lantern silk or satin silk even when the material is a synthetic fabric such as polyester rather than natural silk.
The exact specification varies by project. Colour, weight, stretch, translucency, surface treatment and flame-retardant performance all affect how a replacement section looks and behaves. Whenever possible, use the fabric originally supplied for the lantern or ask the manufacturer to confirm a compatible replacement.
Start by deciding whether the damage is limited to the fabric.
Check the Frame and Wiring Before You Cut
A small tear can often be repaired by replacing the fabric on the affected panel. This method is not suitable when a steel rib is bent, a weld or fixing point has failed, wiring is exposed, a connector is damaged, or the tear extends across several structural sections.
Inspect the lantern with the power isolated. Photograph the damaged area, the surrounding seams and the complete figure before removing anything. These references make it easier to preserve the original fabric direction, colour placement and panel shape.

Three Steps for a Small Lantern Fabric Repair
This example replaces a torn yellow panel on a gold-ingot lantern.
The repair works because the damaged fabric is confined to one section and the metal ribs beneath it remain usable. The replacement is stretched over the same frame lines, secured with the project-specified adhesive and trimmed only after its position has been checked.
Step 01 / 03
Remove the Damaged Fabric and Size the Replacement
Carefully remove the torn material from the affected frame section. Clear loose fabric and old adhesive without damaging the protective finish, nearby lighting or cables. Cut a replacement piece with enough extra material to tension and trim after fitting.

Step 02 / 03
Secure the Fabric with Even Tension
Apply the specified adhesive to clean frame contact points. Position the fabric and tension it gently across the ribs, working from one edge toward the other to reduce wrinkles. Keep the edges accessible until the fabric is aligned and the adhesive has reached the handling strength stated in its instructions.

Step 03 / 03
Trim, Inspect and Test the Repair
After the adhesive has cured as directed, trim the excess fabric close to the frame without cutting adjacent material or wiring. Check the seams, tension and exposed edges with the lights off. Once the work area is clear and the lantern is safe to energise, check the colour and light transmission again with the internal lighting on.
If the new section remains visibly different at the normal viewing distance, replacing the full panel between two frame ribs will usually give a cleaner result than adding another small patch.

Watch the Original Lantern Fabric Repair
The video follows the same gold-ingot lantern from the torn yellow panel through removal, replacement and final trimming. It shows the hand positions and frame access more clearly than still photographs alone.
The materials and adhesive shown were selected for this lantern. Match any repair materials to the specification of your own display rather than treating the video as a universal product instruction.
