Indoor Lantern Festival at Wijnegem Mall
This indoor installation brought an illuminated mushroom village, floral scenes and character lanterns into Wijnegem Mall in Belgium. The photographs and original event video below show the finished displays and selected workshop details.
Bringing a lantern festival into a shopping mall
The Wijnegem Mall display placed illuminated scenes inside an active shopping environment. Visitors encountered mushroom houses, flowers and character lanterns at close range rather than along a large outdoor trail.
That setting changes how a display is experienced. Individual expressions, painted surfaces and the transitions between figures remain visible as people move past them, while the wider scenes still need to read clearly from across the mall.
Layered scenes
Large figures, smaller flowers and ground-level details were combined to create depth within each display area.

Faces, scales, leaves and painted colour transitions remained part of the visitor experience at short viewing distances.
Indoor atmosphere
Internal lighting gave the scenes a strong presence while the surrounding mall remained visible and easy to navigate.
Character and woodland lanterns from the Wijnegem Mall display
The case photographs show a varied indoor route rather than a single repeated motif. A mermaid appears as a stand-alone character, while a golden dragon is set among mushrooms and woodland forms. The hero scene develops the same storybook atmosphere through oversized mushroom houses and illuminated plants.

From flower lantern details to a complete indoor scene
Glowing sunflowers, leaves and mushroom houses gave the installation its garden-like setting. The flowers were not treated as isolated ornaments: their height, colour and placement helped connect the larger character pieces across the scene.
Hand-finished surfaces in the workshop
The workshop photograph shows a tall flower lantern being painted before completion. This finishing stage adds the colour transitions and surface detail that remain visible when the internal lighting is switched on.
