Cultural lantern project

Dai Ethnic Lantern Design with Peacock and Elephant Figures

A coordinated pair of illuminated character lanterns developed around Dai cultural references.

Star Factory Lantern designed and produced this peacock-and-elephant display with matching costume details, bold silhouettes and internal lighting. The two figures were made to read clearly as a pair, both in the workshop and at their outdoor event setting.

Design references

Turning Cultural References into a Clear Lantern Pair

The concept centres on a peacock and an elephant wearing coordinated, Dai-inspired costume details. Both animals are regarded as auspicious symbols in Dai culture, making them a natural starting point for a celebratory display.

The design translates those references into approachable character forms rather than reproducing ceremonial dress literally. Matching jackets link the two figures visually, while the peacock’s broad tail and the elephant’s large ears create distinct silhouettes. Translucent fabric and internal lighting keep the colours and line work visible after dark.

Cultural context: the Yunnan Provincial Ethnic and Religious Affairs Commission discusses the peacock and elephant as auspicious symbols in Dai traditions. For wider background on Dai communities in Yunnan, see Dai Ethnic Group — China Culture.

Production and delivery

From Approved Design to Installed Display in 12 Days

After assembly, the team checked the lighting, surface finish and stability of both figures in the factory. The lanterns were then protected, loaded and transported approximately 1,000 kilometres to the event site.

For this project, design, production, delivery and installation were completed within a 12-day window. Planning the bases, electrical connections and packing sequence together helped the two figures move from the workshop to the finished display without changing their intended form.

The 12-day schedule and 1,000-kilometre journey are specific to this project. Lead times for a new display depend on its design, dimensions, quantity, destination and installation requirements.
