Lightopia Brussels Lantern Festival at Grand-Bigard Castle

A lantern route designed for a historic castle landscape
Grand-Bigard Castle is not an empty exhibition hall. Its gardens, woodland paths, bridges, lawns, water edges, and Renaissance-style architecture already create a strong sense of place. The project therefore needed more than a collection of unrelated Christmas decorations. Each illuminated scene had to contribute to a continuous night-time journey without losing the character of the historic setting.
Public event coverage described a 1.8 km trail with the Fairy Gate, Golden Christmas Tree, Spell Tunnel, Dream Catcher, Magical Safari, Belgium Fairy Flowers, Enchanted Mini-City, Wizardly Lights, Love Land, and an interactive Tree of Life protected by the Manneken Pis Fairy. These zones gave the route changes in scale, colour, subject, and pace as visitors moved through the grounds.
Christmas imagery was only one layer of the experience
The Golden Christmas Tree provided an immediate seasonal landmark, but the wider project moved beyond standard red-and-green décor. Fantasy characters, animal scenes, glowing flowers, illuminated woodland details, and interactive elements created distinct chapters along the castle route.
This balance mattered. Familiar Christmas forms helped visitors recognise the season, while fairytale scenes and Belgian references made the event specific to its host venue. The result was a light trail with a local identity rather than a generic package transferred unchanged from another site.
From lantern concepts in Zigong to installation support in Belgium
Star Factory Lantern's work covered the lantern-specific part of the project: translating approved ideas into buildable display groups, producing the custom lanterns in Zigong, preparing the sections for export packing, and guiding the local team during installation.

Design for the route
Scene concepts were reviewed in relation to lawns, woodland paths, bridges, sightlines, and important visitor nodes.

Approved forms were developed into manufacturable illuminated displays with coordinated structure, surface, colour, and lighting.

Large displays were divided and packed for overseas transport with the later assembly sequence in mind.

Guidance helped the local team connect the factory plan with real access, positioning, assembly, lighting, and site conditions.
Manneken Pis became part of the illuminated story
One of the most recognisable site-specific scenes placed a Manneken Pis figure above an illuminated Tree of Life. Rather than treating a local symbol as a small decorative reference, the design turned it into a prominent route marker that connected the international festival format with Brussels.
For custom lantern projects, this is an important design principle: local architecture, stories, wildlife, or cultural symbols should influence the route itself. They should not be added at the end as isolated branding elements.
Changing scale and subject kept the castle trail visually varied
A long visitor route needs contrast. Large landmarks help orientation; smaller character scenes reward close viewing; tunnels and bridges create transitions; animal and flower groups open new visual zones. The Brussels plan combined these different scene types so the experience did not rely on a single Christmas motif from entrance to exit.
Factory production had to anticipate the work at the castle
Overseas installation starts long before a shipment reaches the venue. Display sections, connection points, access requirements, and the intended assembly order have to be considered during production. That preparation reduces avoidable confusion when a local crew is working against a fixed opening date.
At Grand-Bigard Castle, the installation team also had to work within an existing landscape rather than a purpose-built exhibition floor. Site guidance therefore connected the factory-built lanterns with real paths, bridge widths, lawns, trees, viewing positions, and local operating requirements.
A Chinese lantern craft tradition adapted to a European winter destination
Lightopia Brussels opened to the public on selected days from 18 November 2022 to 8 January 2023. Contemporary event coverage reported that the complete 1.8 km experience contained thousands of light installations using more than one million bulbs.
