Calgary Zoo Lantern Festival: An Animal Lantern Experience

At Calgary Zoo’s Illuminasia festival, animal lanterns, cultural displays and a hands-on workshop formed one visitor experience. Six months of communication, site visits, design, fabrication and installation brought the route from early planning to final lighting.

Project Scope

Six themed areas shaped the visitor route

The work began with site communication and scene planning, followed by factory production, installation, and final lighting on site. Rather than placing isolated animal figures around the venue, the team organized them as one coherent route for zoo visitors.

01

Wildlife area

Recognizable land animals formed prominent route scenes and family photo points.

02

Aquatic life area

Aquatic animals and plants expanded the route beyond terrestrial wildlife.

03

North American culture

Regional cultural references helped connect the festival with its Calgary setting.

04

Traditional culture

Lantern-making traditions added cultural context to the illuminated route.

05

Teaching area

Educational content supported the zoo setting and family learning experience.

06

Interactive workshop

Visitors could add colors and patterns to a small lantern and take it home.

Day and Night

A zoo attraction receives visitors before the lights are switched on, so the animal forms, colors, painted details, and scenic composition also need to remain convincing during the day. At night, internal illumination reveals the strongest visual effect and connects the individual scenes into a continuous route.

This day-to-night requirement influences material finish, color contrast, viewing distance, photo-point placement, cable planning, and maintenance access. It is particularly important for zoos, theme parks, resorts, and public attractions with long daily operating hours.

Animal Lantern Production

Building recognizable animals for an immersive zoo route

Animal lanterns were central to the Calgary route. Each figure needed to be recognizable from its silhouette, body proportions, posture, surface color, and facial expression before lighting details were added.

For the Calgary project, the animal scenes were coordinated with the route and surrounding areas rather than treated as isolated decorations. Their position, lighting, and installation sequence were considered together so the completed attraction read as one experience.

Recognizable animal forms

Silhouette, posture, color, and expression make each species readable to visitors.

Public event context

Scenes support the event identity, route communication, and family photo experience.

Project coordination

Planning, production, installation, and lighting are reviewed as connected delivery stages.

Visitor Participation

A hands-on lantern workshop for families

How did visitors participate? Small animal lanterns were prepared with an uncolored white surface. Visitors could draw their preferred colors and patterns, creating a personal lantern to take home.

The workshop extended the experience beyond viewing illuminated scenes. It introduced the basic idea of lantern surface decoration, gave families a creative activity during the visit, and created a physical souvenir connected to the festival.

The same format can be adapted as a supervised workshop, educational station, seasonal program, or bookable family activity alongside a zoo or theme park night route.
