Giant Lantern Installation Guidance for Local Crews

01 · Factory production
A Christmas lantern set prepared for delivery
This Christmas lantern set was completed over roughly two weeks. It included Santa Claus, a snowman and a reindeer-drawn sleigh. The sections were assembled and illuminated in the factory so the team could check their fit and appearance before packing.
The finished set was prepared for shipment to Northern Europe for a seasonal event. Because the figures were too large to travel as single pieces, the factory check also helped confirm how they would be divided, identified and reassembled at the venue.
02 · From factory to venue
Plan the local installation before the lanterns leave the factory
Large lantern displays usually arrive in several sections. The receiving team therefore needs more than a packing list: it must understand the assembly order, lifting points, matching parts, electrical connectors and checks to complete before the display is switched on.
Installation planning should begin during production. The display size, site access, lifting method and available local crew determine how each section is packed, handled and assembled.
These questions should be settled before shipment: Will the site require a hoist or crane? Which pieces look similar? How are left and right sections identified? Which connectors belong together? What spare parts should be available during setup?
For this project, the handoff materials included part labels, connector references, an illustrated installation guide, a video demonstration and spare components. They gave the local team a clearer sequence to follow after the shipment arrived.
03 · Lifting & installation
Choose lifting equipment for the display and the site

Not every large lantern needs the same equipment. A compact hoist may be suitable for some sections, while a larger display or street installation may require a crane. Lanterns designed to be lifted can be prepared with planned attachment points. The final lifting method, equipment capacity and site controls must be confirmed by the local installation team for the actual venue.
04 · Part identification
Labels help the crew match similar-looking sections

Large character lanterns can contain several pieces with similar shapes. Each section is labeled so the crew can identify its position before assembly. On this snowman, for example, the arm shown in the image is marked as the left-arm section. Checking the labels before lifting helps prevent parts from being installed in the wrong position.
05 · Documentation & demonstration
Installation guides, connector references and spare parts

Before shipment, the project team prepares an illustrated installation guide and a video showing the planned assembly sequence and cable connections. These materials help the receiving crew prepare its tools, lifting equipment and work sequence before unloading.
A box of project-specific spare components can also travel with the lanterns so common replacement items are available during setup. The following video is an example of the guidance supplied for a large lantern installation.
