Zigong Lantern Festival Displays in Italy
A visual case from a large Chinese lantern event in Bologna, bringing together a landmark dragon, illuminated animals, aquatic scenes and a cultural performance setting.
From individual lanterns to a complete visitor setting
The Italy project combined several kinds of illuminated scenery rather than relying on one centrepiece. A long Chinese dragon created the main landmark, while animal figures, fish and lotus scenes, architectural forms and a performance area gave visitors different reasons to stop as they moved through the event.
Star Factory Lantern’s work focused on the display package: developing buildable forms, fabricating the steel-framed lanterns, fitting internal lighting and surface finishes, preparing sections for transport, and supporting installation in Italy.
The project photographs show how scale, visual hierarchy and lighting balance changed between indoor preview pieces and the larger outdoor route.
Different scales for different moments in the route
The strongest festival routes change pace. Large landmarks work across long sightlines; smaller animal and floral groups reward closer viewing; stage scenery gives the audience a place to pause.

A festival needs more than a collection of bright objects
Each scene had a different job. The dragon established the event’s scale, the animal figures worked at close viewing distance, the aquatic groups added colour and movement, and the stage supported scheduled performances.
That variety matters because visitors do not experience a route from one fixed viewpoint. The display has to read from the entrance, between scenes, at photo stops and around the areas where people gather.
Use one or two large landmarks to orient visitors, then support them with smaller scenes that change the rhythm of the route.
Large silhouettes need clean outlines, while eye detail, painted colour and fabric texture matter most near photo areas.
Connection points, cable routes and packing divisions should be resolved before the surface work closes the frame.
Access width, foundations, power distribution, working hours and local crew responsibilities affect how the displays are delivered and assembled.

The short film shows the dragon’s length, the colour balance between scenes and how the displays look after dark. It plays only when you select it.
