A two-city winter event

What was the Lightopia lantern festival 2020?

The Lightopia lantern festival 2020 was a large cultural night event held in both London and Manchester. The two-city programme brought large-scale lantern art and illuminated installations to life for families, photographers and event visitors.

Its creative direction worked as a hybrid seasonal lantern show, combining the joy of Christmas with the family-reunion atmosphere of the Chinese Spring Festival. Visitors encountered both traditions along the route, producing an unusual cross-cultural night experience.

01 · Visual landmarks

Large lantern art

Giant figures, animals, flowers, birds and story scenes created recognisable stopping points.

02 · Visitor movement

Immersive route design

Tunnels, repeated scenes and lighting transitions guided visitors through the parks.

Refreshment areas and live shows extended the night beyond the lantern display itself.

One festival · Two city experiences

Lantern festival routes for London and Manchester

Each city had its own theme and layout. The common festival identity remained visible, while the route responded to the character and visitor flow of each park.

Manchester · Heaton Park

Glowing tunnels, giant animals and responsive light

At Heaton Park, visitors moved through illuminated tunnels, giant animal lanterns and music-reactive light shows. The sequence created a changing rhythm as guests progressed through the Manchester light festival route.

London · Chiswick House and Gardens

Traditional lanterns, an illuminated peacock and interactive scenes

Chiswick House and Gardens combined traditional Chinese lantern displays, an oversized illuminated peacock and interactive elements along a night trail around the house, lake and gardens.

Designing each scene as part of the visitor journey

Every display was part of a custom plan rather than an isolated object. Scale, silhouette, colour, lighting and scene order worked together so the route could reveal a new visual moment at each stage.

  • Walk-through tunnels and transition features
  • Giant animal lanterns and recognisable photo landmarks
  • Chinese-style floral, bird and story scenes
  • Music-reactive lighting and immersive night effects

“We hope visitors not only enjoy these dreamlike night lights, but can also approach them, experience them at close range and interact with the environment.”

Our work on the project

Design, production, export packing and joint installation

Our work connected the approved lantern concepts with factory production in Zigong, export preparation and the on-site assembly sequence in the United Kingdom.

The installation was a joint effort. The factory-built sections, packing order and site work had to stay aligned across two venues with different routes and operating conditions.

What this UK lantern festival case shows venue teams

A successful light festival proposal should connect the creative concept with the real site, operating window and visitor journey. The Lightopia 2020 record highlights four decisions that should be made before production begins.

01 · SITE

Plan for the actual park

Map entrances, route length, viewing distance, ground conditions, service access and rest points.

02 · STORY

Give the route a rhythm

Alternate landmarks, tunnels, intimate scenes and lighting transitions so the journey keeps changing.

03 · AUDIENCE

Design for close interaction

Consider family viewing, photography, queues, barriers, performance pauses and comfortable circulation.

04 · DELIVERY

Connect design to handoff

Confirm modular sections, lighting zones, packing, shipping, installation access and local responsibility.
