Crystal Palace Christmas Lantern Festival
At Lightopia London in 2021, the Reborn theme connected a large illuminated phoenix with a lantern-art recreation of the lost Crystal Palace. This case brings together the finished displays, original design comparison, installation photograph and event video.

From design and production to joint installation
For the 2021 Crystal Palace project, Star Factory Lantern handled the lantern design, production and export packing, then took part in the joint on-site installation.

The Reborn theme linked the phoenix with Crystal Palace
The phoenix gave the event a clear symbol of renewal. Its rising form, layered feathers and flame-like colour were designed to remain recognisable as a large illuminated landmark within the night route.
The theme also connected with the history of Crystal Palace itself. The famous exhibition building was destroyed by fire in 1936, and the 2021 event returned its outline to the park as an illuminated artwork. Together, the phoenix and palace created a visual story about loss, memory and renewal.
Star Factory Lantern’s project materials document the work through design artwork, finished night photographs and an on-site lifting image.
Phoenix landmark
A large illuminated figure carried the idea of rebirth and remained legible across the surrounding landscape.
Historic reference
The lost Crystal Palace was interpreted through lantern construction rather than rebuilt as a conventional structure.
Route setting
The principal pieces formed part of a wider evening trail through Crystal Palace Park.

Carrying the phoenix design into the finished lantern
The side-by-side image shows how the main silhouette, layered wings, sweeping tail and warm colour structure moved from the visual design into the finished build.
At this scale, the comparison is not only about colour. The curve of the body, the spacing of the feathers and the relationship between the bright inner areas and darker outlines all affect whether the phoenix reads clearly after dark.
A two-kilometre light trail through Crystal Palace Park
The event was experienced as a route rather than a single installation. Time Out’s November 2021 coverage reported a two-kilometre trail with interactive lights and lanterns, alongside illuminated water and laser effects.
Within that wider setting, the phoenix and architectural lanterns worked as large visual anchors. Visitors could approach the pieces from changing angles while continuing along the route.

The project video shows the finished night setting and the relationship between individual lanterns and the wider visitor route.
Recreating the Crystal Palace as lantern art
The installation translated the rhythm and silhouette of the historic Crystal Palace into an illuminated artwork for the park that still carries its name.
China Daily’s November 2021 report described the palace recreation as the centrepiece of the Christmas display. The report also noted that the original building was created for the Great Exhibition of 1851 and was destroyed by fire in 1936.
The newspaper reported that the lanterns were handmade in China before being shipped to the United Kingdom.

Positioning the phoenix before the route opened
The installation photograph records the large phoenix being lifted by crane. Its scale required the structure, lifting points and final position to work together so the completed form could be secured and viewed as intended.
The materials on this page document the phoenix from design development and lantern production through to its on-site positioning.
Start with the story, route and installation conditions
For a Christmas lantern festival or destination light trail, share the venue plan, available route, main viewing points, preferred theme, opening date and local installation arrangements. These details help the design and production team plan the scale, sectioning, transport and site work around a real operating schedule.
Plan seasonal landmarks, character scenes and coordinated venue displays.
Connect the creative theme with the route, site and project schedule.
Review how an idea is developed into a site-specific illuminated form.
