How We Built a 2.2-Metre Floating Witch Lantern for Halloween

This workshop build separates the hat, costume and boots to create the impression of a figure with no visible head or body. The effect depends on careful alignment between the steel frame, internal lighting, fabric and final colour work.

Stage 1 · Frame fabrication

The steel frame established the pose and spacing

Fabricators shaped and welded the wire frame around the costume’s main lines, including the brim of the hat, the shoulders, the sleeves, the dress and the boots. The frame had to hold these separate forms in a consistent relationship while leaving room for lighting and surface work.

The support was reviewed from several angles before the visible finish was added. At this stage, small changes to the height or angle of one section could alter the balance of the entire figure.

Stage 2 · Internal lighting

Lighting followed the costume rather than filling one solid body

Because the figure is divided into separate pieces, the lighting was installed around each visible section. Flexible light lines traced the hat and clothing so the silhouette would remain clear after dark.

The workshop team checked the spacing between the illuminated parts before closing the surfaces. This helped the hat, upper body and boots read as a single floating character instead of three unrelated objects.

Stage 3 · Fabric fitting

Fabric gave the wire structure the weight and folds of clothing

Artisans fitted coloured fabric over the wire frame by hand. The sleeves, cape and pleated dress needed clean edges and enough depth to look like clothing rather than flat illuminated panels.

The purple hat and shoulder pieces, warm brown dress and pale sleeves and stockings were assembled as separate colour areas. Their proportions were checked together before the final surface work began.

Stage 4 · Colour and finish

Shading restored depth after the surface was closed

Once the fabric had been fitted, colour and shading were applied to define the folds, edges and accessories. Details around the belt, pouch, sleeves and boots helped the costume remain readable in normal workshop light.

The completed surface was then reviewed with the lighting on. This final comparison showed where an edge needed more definition or where the illuminated outline interrupted the intended shape.

What the build shows

A simple illusion depends on several parts working together

The gaps are part of the design

The empty spaces between the costume sections create the floating effect, so their position matters as much as the visible surfaces.

Lighting must preserve the silhouette

Each section needs enough light to remain legible without turning the entire figure into one bright outline.

Daylight still matters

Colour, folds and accessory details give the display a finished appearance before the lighting is switched on.

Planning a Halloween display

Start with the venue, scale and opening date

Share the intended setting, approximate dimensions, indoor or outdoor use, destination and target opening date. Our team can review how the idea may translate into a buildable illuminated display.
